Tension on LAC and Boycott China expedition, India imports the most from China, Dragon among the top 5 countries

 

Last year, there were violent clashes between the army and troops in the Galwan Valley due to the eye-latching of Indian and Chinese soldiers near LAC in eastern Ladakh. In spite of the fact that people across the country ran a boycott China-like campaign, China remained on the top of the list of countries from which India imported during January-December 2020. During this period, India imported goods worth $ 58.71 billion from China. Hardeep Singh Puri said in response to a question by Trinamool Congress MP Mala Roy in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

38.59% of total imports from top five countries

In his written reply, the minister said that China, US, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are the top five countries from which India increased its imports. The minister said that during January-December 2020, India imported $ 58.71 billion from China, $ 26.89 billion from the US, $ 23.96 billion from the United Arab Emirates, $ 17.73 billion from Saudi Arabia and $ 16.26 billion from Iraq. The total imports from the top five countries amounted to $ 143.55 billion, accounting for 38.59% of the total imports of $ 371.98 billion.

The minister also told the House that, "Imports tend to bridge the gap between domestic production and supply, consumer demand and preferences of different commodities." The major items imported from China, according to the minister, were "products such as telecommunications equipment, computer hardware and peripherals, fertilizers, electronic components / devices, project goods, organic chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates, consumer electronics, electrical machinery, etc."
